Depending on the surface preparation, processing, quality of the wallpaper and the time the old wallpaper has spent on the wall, removing the wallpaper can do more or less work. Cover the old wallpaper - just not!

Even if it is quite possible with some wallpapers, do not stick over old wallpapers. And for several reasons. The days of thin paper wallpaper, when it was not noticeable when there were a few layers underneath, are over. Wallpapers are very different today. Structures and colors can push through or shine through. Especially with non-woven wallpaper there is a risk that wallpaper with a darker color shine through. But it also becomes a problem when the old wallpaper is no longer properly attached and is therefore no longer viable. Usually this can only be seen at a few corners that come loose. So it is always better to remove the old wallpaper and create a perfect surface for the new wallpaper.

Remove non-woven wallpaper - how it works

One of the advantages of non-woven wallpaper is that you can actually pull off the strips dry. The emphasis is actually on. Because that's not always possible. Especially with non-woven wallpapers with a thin non-woven backing it will not succeed. Especially not if the non-woven wallpaper has been professionally processed with a non-woven adhesive. The taping can then be very tedious. Usually only small pieces come off. Then all that remains is to soak the non-woven wallpaper and then peel it off. The preparation of the surface is also important for easy taping of the non-woven wallpaper. If, for example, you did not use the deep ground for plasterboard walls, you will also face major problems if you want the wallpaper to go down again.

Remove paper wallpaper - no problem

If you want to remove paper wallpaper, the easiest way is to soak the wallpaper and then remove it with a spatula. For stubborn wallpapers, you can use wallpaper remover that is added to the water. However, wallpaper remover is not cheap. Another option is to stir some paste into the water. The consistency of the paste-water mixture should be very thin. The mixture is applied to the wallpaper. If the paper wallpaper is soaked, you can use a spatula to loosen the strips.

Wallpaper difficult to remove - so wallpaper gives small

Not every wallpaper can be easily removed. The reasons for this are diverse and range from poorly prepared substrates to paste additives such as latex or adhesive strength boosters to coated surfaces. In each of these cases, taping can become torture. But you don't have to despair.

The most important thing now is to open the surface of coated wallpapers. You can get flat vinyl wallpapers, compact vinyl wallpapers and other coated wallpapers with a wallpaper spiked roller. If you do not have them at hand, the cutter knife with which you scratch the surface crisscross is often sufficient. Then soak the wallpaper. The water can now penetrate the wallpaper and loosen the paste.

Remove wallpaper from plasterboard - with patience and hauntings you can do it

One of the biggest problems is likely to be the masking of plasterboard walls. If you or your predecessor forgot to treat the plasterboard with deep primer before wallpapering, the wallpaper will be difficult or impossible to remove. Woodchip, in particular, the surface of which is also sealed with paint, is difficult to separate from the plasterboard. But also paper wallpaper and many cheap non-woven wallpapers can only be removed with great effort. It is often not possible to do this without damaging the plasterboard.

To make matters worse, you can't act on plasterboard walls like you can on stone walls. Scratching tools, too much water or steam are taboo. They only damage the underlying plates. You only get wallpaper from plasterboard with a lot of patience - or not at all. Try to dissolve the wallpaper carefully by wetting it sparingly with water. With the spatula you can loosen piece by piece.

If you cannot remove the wallpaper and you still want to wallpaper again, there are only a few solutions. You could replace the plasterboard with new ones, which you then prepare well before wallpapering. Or you wallpaper wallpaper on wallpaper. To do this, you should check the surface carefully.

You should consider this before the next wallpapering

So that you only have half as much work with the next wallpapering, you should note a few things. The most important thing is the preparation of the surface. It is usually sufficient if you renovate it thoroughly. You will then have a long rest and the wallpapers will be easier to paper and remove. It is also important to choose the right wallpaper. You cannot require simple wallpaper with a thin backing material to have the same positive properties as an exclusive wallpaper with a heavy backing material. It is understandable, of course, that not everyone can afford high-quality wallpapers. Then you should at least prepare the surface very meticulously.
