Which wall design should it be?

The decision for one or the other wall covering is mostly made instinctively. Always there were in the kitchen tiles on the wall and today there it must probably be also like that. Besides, the materials have evolved tremendously and also wallpapers are abrasion resistant and washable today. You may try quietly sometimes something new and free themselves of old traditions. With the choice of the wall covering certain criterias should be considered:

  • Should the wall covering be lasting or would you like to have the possibility to change over and over again?
  • How is the subsoil procure?
  • Does the wall lie in the wet area?
  • Which craftsmanship abilities exist? Can you attach, perhaps, one or other kind of the wall clothing yourselves?
  • Do you need craftsmen?
  • And what financial resources are planned?
Certainly still a few points occur to you about which one must think.

Flexibility is important in many rooms

Especially the issue of flexibility, you should never be ignored, because only in rare cases, you will have an apartment facility over a lifetime. If the lasting wall covering does not fit to the new pieces of furniture then, a lot of work comes up to you. And also the taste changes. If you have liked white walls even today, you want it tomorrow rather comfortably and homely. Hardly nobody keeps his taste for a lifetime.

Another factor is the fashion which should be also considered. In the own four walls you directed rather after your own taste. Nevertheless, stylish phenomena are moved over and over again. You draw inspiration from the fashion trend if you form just the flat anew.

And finally, flexibility is asked particularly in rented flats, because here you can not just bring tiles and plasters to the wall, because you must remove them with the move. This would already be a huge financial load.

Plaster, tiles, wooden panels or wallpapers?

The difference already lies in the state of the wall coverings. Plaster and tiles are very long-lasting wall clothings, if they are treated well and carefully. They do not need anything except now and then a cleaning or some colour. Wood is just as durable, but needs a little more care. You get more flexibility with wallpapers.

Advantages and disadvantages of plaster

You should already take an expert if you have not learnt it yourselves to get plaster expertly to the wall. It is not quite so simple. If you work not very accurate, you will see later the landing of the plaster. The application of plaster by companies is not quite cheap. In most cases you can adapt the plaster still in colour to your wishes, however, but that also depends somewhat on the kind of the plaster. Should you decide, nevertheless, once differently, you can remove the plaster only with a lot of trouble again.

An advantage is the long durability and the robustness of the plaster. Just in rooms where wallpapering is possible only with a lot of expenditure as for example in big stairwells or where wall coverings also sometimes must hold a little bit more, plaster offers. Plaster is also relatively insensible against moisture. However, with very coarse structural plaster the cleaning can be complicated. Just with the choice of the plaster kind and the grain, you should weigh exactly the advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages and disadvantages of tiles

Tiles are perfect of course for the direct application in the wet area. By the closed surface moisture can not penetrate deeper into the masonry, the wall is protected. Tiles can be easily cleaned and also bring a little bit hygienic cleanness with themselves. However, they are not to attach easily. If you liked to get no expert, you should practice a lot before. And is not so easy to lay tiles as it looks. Another disadvantage is the durability of the wall covering. You can not change tiles. You have the wall coating for many years and you are bound to it. Tiles can be removed only hard and not seldom the whole subsoil must be renewed if you liked to raise no tiles again.

Advantages and disadvantages of wooden panels

You can attach wooden panels with a little bit craft talent by yourselves. The panels are long-lasting, if they are tended right, and relatively robust. Another advantage compared to tiles and plaster is the breathability. Wood can absorb moisture from the space and deliver again. However, the material is rather unfavorable for wet rooms like bath and kitchen, because wood changes with extreme humidity variations and can go out of shape. Moreover, wood gets dark with the time and requires regular paintings. The panels can be removed only difficultly again from the wall and leave tracks. Behind wooden panels it can come to mould forming with humid walls.

Advantages and disadvantages of wallpapers

Wallpapers are not to be excelled in flexibility. The offer of wallpapers is unique and gigantic. No other wall covering has to offer so many patterns, colours, structures and surface creations. Wallpapers take a forerunner position with the spatial arrangement. Different patterns can be combined with different equipment styles. With wallpapers surfaces can be given priority. However, they also create a harmonious connection between wall and flat equipment.

You can paper modern wallpapers like the non-woven wallpapers fast and remove as fast again. New materials also permit the application in wet rooms. Indeed, wallpapers should not come to direct contact with water as it would be the case in a shower. In contrast to plaster and tiles, wallpapers provide warmth and cosiness. The costs and the amount of work to involve are relatively low with wallpapers, unless, you decide on a very exclusive wallpaper.

A lot of wallpapers are also very robust, in the meantime. They can not keep up with plaster, tiles and wooden panels, but still have a lot of durability to offer. Here you should also put to yourselves the question, how often you need such a robust wall as it originates with plaster. You can clean some wallpapers also easily. They are rub resistant and water resistant.

Before you decide on one or the other wall covering, you should consider what is the best for your walls and what your requirements are. In many areas wallpapers compete easily with other wall coverings.
